Iccl Sports South Bend- the history
The South Bend area has a long and rich history when it comes to sports. From the early days of baseball and basketball, to the more modern era of football and hockey, the South Bend area has always been a hotbed for sporting activity.
One of the earliest examples of this is the International League team known as the South Bend Green Sox. The team was established in 1912 and played its home games at Playland Park, which was located on the cityufffds west side. The Green Sox were one of the most successful teams in the league, winning four championships between 1915 and 1925.
In 1916, another professional team called the South Bend Bends joined the ranks. This team was part of the new Federal League, which only lasted two seasons before folding. The Bends were not nearly as successful as the Green Sox, but they did manage to win their division in their first season before ultimately losing in the playoffs.
South Bendufffds first foray into basketball came in 1902 with the formation of a semi-professional team known as The Aristocrats. The team played its home games at Notre Dameufffds Washington Hall and was made up mostly of Notre Dame students. The Aristocrats had some success, winning multiple state championships during their time; however, they disbanded in 1917 due to World War I.
After The Aristocrats dissolved, there would not be another professional basketball team in South Bend until 1978 when the Indiana Pacers (now known asthe Fort Wayne Mad Ants) moved their franchise here from New Jersey. The Pacers only stayed for two seasons before moving again; however, during their time in South
